Verify the Inlet Gas Pressure

This isn't just a box-ticking exercise. What you're aiming for here is the perfect balance that allows your machine to operate smoothly and efficiently. Too low, and your cuts lack clarity and precision. Too high, and you're just wearing your system down, compromising its longevity.


What you need to do here is to whip out that gauge regularly and also to consult your trusty manual to achieve your machine’s optimal numbers.


Inspect and Clean Air Filters Regularly

These are the gatekeepers of your plasma table. They stand guard against dust, debris, and other contaminants that could compromise your cutting quality and more importantly–your machine’s health.


Note that our plasma cutter needs to "breathe" cleanly to function at its best. Keep its lungs clean for optimal operation, and we're good. Depending on the environment of your workspace–you might be checking and cleaning these filters more frequently than you think.


Check the Coolant Level

Without adequate coolant, your machine risks overheating, which can lead to performance drops. Before you know it, you're dealing with a full-blown meltdown—and nobody wants that!

Check Gas Quality

The quality of gas we feed them directly impacts their performance, longevity, and even the quality of work they produce. Whether it's the shielding gas in welding operations or the oxygen-acetylene mix in cutting processes, ensuring you're using the right grade and as well as the purity of gas can mean the difference between a masterpiece and a mess.


So, how do you check it?


First off, always source your gases from reputable suppliers. Don't skimp or cut corners here! Secondly, keep an eye (or nose) out for any signs of contamination or irregularities. If something smells fishy--it probably is. Check your gas cylinders, hoses, and connections for leaks or damage, everyone!


Weekly Once-Overs

A dedicated, thorough inspection of your equipment and workspace. You're going to want to check for any signs of wear and tear, loose components, or anything that seems out of the ordinary.


Lubrication is also your best friend here–make sure all moving parts are well-oiled and happy. Dust and debris are your enemies, so show them the door with a good cleaning session. Electrical connections? Tight and secure. Safety gear and emergency stops? Check and double-check.


This is your opportunity to catch potential issues before they escalate into full-blown problems. Plus, it's a great way to get familiar with every nut and bolt of your equipment, making you more prepared to tackle any issues head-on!

Erratic Cutting Patterns or Poor Quality Cuts


Frustrating, isn't it? But before you start questioning your skills, do these:

  • Check Your Consumables- inspect the nozzle, electrode, and shield for wear and tear. A worn-out nozzle can throw off your entire game by affecting the plasma arc's focus and stability.

  • Inspect the Torch and Work Clamp Connections- ensure that everything is tightened up nicely. A solid connection is key to a steady current flow, which in turn, affects cut quality.

  • Look at Your Air Supply- if your machine can't get enough clean air, it won't perform. You need to install a good air filter and regulator, too, and keep an eye on the air pressure.


Machine Not Starting or Operating Erratically

  • Power Supply Issues- yes, check your power source! It might seem obvious, but even the best of us overlook these simple things. Make sure it is properly plugged in and that the outlet is delivering consistent power.

  • Software Glitches- it might be time for a software update or perhaps a reboot.

  • Control System Check- check for any error messages and consult your trusty manual. Sometimes, recalibrating or resetting it can clear up these gremlins.


Overheating

  • Air Flow is Your Best Friend- the first thing you want to check is whether there's enough air circulating around and through the machine. Make sure the cooling vents are clear of any debris or dust that could be choking its breath.

  • Coolant Levels and Circulation- ensure the coolant pump is operating smoothly, with no kinks in the hoses, and no blockages.

  • Duty Cycle Respect- give your machine the rest it deserves between cuts, especially during heavy-duty operations. 


Unusual Noises

  • Belt Tension & Wear- you need to adjust the tension as needed here and inspect the belts for any signs of wear and tear. Sometimes, all it needs is a little adjustment; other times, it might be asking for a replacement.

  • Loose Components- rattle or clanking noise? You know you need to pop the hood and take a look. Tighten up any loose parts you find; nuts, bolts, or even tools that have made their way into nooks and crannies they shouldn't be in.
